Shadowlawn, circa 1815, is located in the center of historic Bardstown, Nelson County, Kentucky. The home is conveniently located 45-minutes south of Louisville and an hour east from Lexington.
Surrounded by large shade trees in both the front and back yards, the house has been thoughtfully restored throughout, and reflects particular architectural trends that were prevalent during various periods from the late 18th century to the early 20th century.
The architect, Baltimore-based John Rogers, built Shadowlawn upon completion of Bardstowns Saint Josephs Cathedral (situated across the road from Shadowlawn) which he also designed.Rogers, a wood-working specialist, assisted in the reconstruction of the White House in Washington, D.C. after the British partially burned it during the War of 1812.One notices some of the wood molding and finishings in Shadowlawn are similar to those in the private residence in the White House.
Coupled with its historic restoration, the home has been modernized from its plumbing to its electrical infrastructure; has a central vacuum system throughout; and has three separate heating and cooling units to ensure efficiency.
Currently, Shadowlawn is offered out as a small Bread and Breakfast Inn (two/three bedrooms) and maintains the entire prerequisite permits necessary to operate.
